Ever since day one in the life of the College’s website the navigation menu has always been….well, Purple. It’s one of those things that until recently I’d considered pretty sacrosanct  but I think things might be about to change. It springs from the fact that SMT want to re-evaluate the way we present ourselves to the wider world in-line with a total revamp of the College prospectus. Consequently they have asked for some new prospectus mockups as well as a redesign of the homepage. So, I’ve set to work trying to balance this new concept with the practical application of such a change. If like many other schools we were in the position of having a relatively small site with just a few tens of pages all built around a template it wouldn’t be such a challenge. However we have always been different. In fact for me it’s not so much a technical challenge but a conceptual one. I’m the first to admit that I was actually a little reluctant to change things in line with my “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. But as the adage goes “A change is as good as a rest” so I think I’ve managed to climb over the mental hurdle and started to embrace the new. The biggest change will be the move away from the homepage being a College wide news portal to more of a shopfront with the news moved over to page 2. As with all things webby the functionality litmus test will be if it’s a hit or miss.
