Alcock, Brown & a low flying Vickers Vimy!

You know, it’s not all sitting in front of computer screens and trying to make sense of stuff like…

I do actually venture out into the daylight every now & then, I even get to talk to people sometimes. What’s more amazing is some of them even listen to what I have to say! I know it’s hard to believe but I really do get to have some fun every now & then working as a member of the College’s ‘Technoarmy‘. I was lucky enough to be involved in a couple of things this week. I started off with the ‘Science Week’ over at Instow primary on Monday & finished off with a presentation at the Launch event for our 5th year of ‘Specialist Status’.  

Because of the College’s ’Specialist Science Status’ we are able to lend extra support to our Primary feeders, including helping them with themed science weeks. Instows science week looked at all aspects of flight.
I got to kick things off with a presentation looking at the history of flight from Dinosaurs to Space ships.  (Something very dear to my uber-nurds heart) This was the latest incarnation of a show I’ve done couple of times before & judging by the reaction it went down a storm with the added bonus of being really good fun for me. (There’s something very joyful about talking about something you have a passion for) The pupils particularly love the supersonic silliness of the Lockheed Blackbird & the heroism of Alcock & Brown.

As an appropriate ‘good’ bookend to the week, I also gave a presentation at the Specialist Science Year 5 launch do up at the Hallsannery Center. It’s an annual event that focuses on what our achievements at the College have been over the past 12 months & to look forward to the plans for the next academic year in relation to our specialist status. Once again I got to kick off proceedings with a talk about the forthcoming cross curricular project ’Greening Bideford’. It’s still in the development stages and i won’t spoil the fun here but suffice to say if it’s anywhere near as effective & successful  as it’s parent project was, The BIG Climate thing, it should be something to look forward to big time.
