Putting the final tweaks to a new WordPress Blog today. Post Easter & Year 9 Option Choices it can be hard for some students to fully focus on subjects that they have not chosen to follow as they move into Y10. Art are tackling the issue head on by developing a blog that will allow all Year 9 students to publish work online and in doing so give them a focus and goal to work work towards. It’s hoped it will not only become a showcase for the work Year 9′s have done up until that point but also be a springboard into Year 10 for those who are going to study GCSE Art. The Department are also hoping that it could help to develop different approaches to Art & the way in which we look at the world.

New A Level Art Blog
I’ve been looking for an excuse to use the Vertigo WordPress Theme for AGES and finally got the chance with a request for a student run blog for A Level Art. Live & Online now.
I’ve been a massive fan of Saul Bass’s phenomenal artwork for years and it only seemed pertinent to use it this week more than any other.

Hits Rise Again in 2012

It looks like it’s been another good year for my little babies nestling under the umbrella of Bideford College Online.
The Main College Website has had over 70,000 hits alone this year continuing it’s year on year rise.
Add to that nearly 24,000 hits to this news blog, nearly 400 Twitter Followers and a high hit rate on our Facebook page and it’s good evidence to demonstrate I must be doing something right!
During the past 12 months I’ve been working hard to provide Parents and Carers, the wider community and the world in general with better College-Centric online provision.
However the most staggering statistic is reserved for ‘Bidefrog’. Students visited the home page a staggering 114,649 times in the past year.
I’m hoping for big things with more frog powered resources coming online in the next 12 months including ‘Homework Hunter’.
As ever Student & Department blogging continues in popularity and I’m looking forward to the rest of 2013 when I hope to be venturing into new developmental areas releasing iPhone, Android & iPad apps for news and homework.
There’s bound to be the the usual mountain of resources too.
Happy Blogging in 2013!

New Career As A Weather Man?

Yesterday I delivered to our green screen media Guru, Chris, a big fat multi layered photoshop file specifically for budding weather forecasters.
It features maps of the South West, The U.K , Spain & a gallery of symbols.
Wannabe weatherpeeps can then script, organise maps, & then present, in front of a green screen, their very own weather forecast.
MFL are in on the act with their own Spanish Weather Channel.
Can’t wait to see the finished article in use. I’ll post a video a.s.a.i.c.
P.S I used the awesome puppet warp tool in PS-CS5 to point my arm @ Bude instead of Plymouth!
Bored Of ‘Body Onload’?
Even with the best planning in the world sometimes webpages become obsolete or you just have to move them from A to B.
Often you can get over the problem of a potential ‘404 Page Not Found‘ error by using the old Javascript ‘Onload’ event to ‘Push’ the visitor to another page/location on your site.
Job done, no worries & effective if a user has ‘Favorited’ or linked to your old content.
However it always strikes me as displaying a lack of imagination on those occasions when you hit a blank page with a single line of text saying. “This page has moved“.
I’ve just updated our student handbooks and they now reside our Frog server & due to workload I’ll admit, to my everlasting shame, I did just that. Plain white page with line of text & the old ‘Onload’ event.
This morning though, on the way into work, I got to thinking how dull that was & how I really should try a little harder.
A quick ‘Basil Rathbone’ Google & then 5 mins in Photoshop & I much prefer the solution now. A lesson in pointless & time-wasting stuff for the sake of it??? Maybe but I prefer it now.
Anatomy Of A Web Page

Currently receiving a jolly good thrashing in Dreamweaver & Photoshop is a new ICT Department resource. Anatomy Of A Web Page is aimed at Year 8 Students about to take their first delve into the murky depths of web page design, it looks at the fundamental ‘Anatomy’ of html & web pages, showing them examples and setting simple tasks to develop their knowledge. I’ll add a live link when it’s finally cooked.

Gotta love the Google Maps API

Thanks to the popularity of Googles’ all conquering ‘Maps‘ & ‘Street View’ the list of additional uses of the maps api just keeps getting better & better. In light of two of the current big news stories here in the UK (The Icelandic volcanic eruption & the impending general election) I thought I ‘d share with you a few of my fave implementations of the aforementioned api.
Flight Rader 24 - View real time GPS signals from all the flights in European airspace. Especially amusing at the moment.
Walk Jog Run – I’ve been a fan of ‘Walk Jog Run’ for quite a while now. Takes the basic Google measuring tool & ramps it up a notch or two.
Twit Vote – Simple but interesting vote intention plotter using your Twitter account.
Street Art Locator – International map of street art locations.
If you have any other great uses of the gmapi then drop me a message.
‘Rednock Frogs’ & a taster of the future.

Was extremely lucky yesterday to have the opportunity to visit Rednock School up in Dursley, Glos’.
Like us they have been the beneficiaries of a brand spanking new BSF one school pathfinder school but they are a little further down the line than we are as they moved in this September. We were there ostensibly for a Frog awareness day, which was of course excellent, with a cracking presentation by Niall Brennan from Arrowvale school (who have just rolled out their install to students just 3 weeks ago). However we also were given the chance to tour the new building in the afternoon.
To say I was impressed would be a massive understatement. WOW! It was jaw droppingly amazing. What impressed was the phenomenal architectural statement which was bold & adventurous but on a very human scale. Externally the library ‘pod’ grabs your attention but the mix of timber & coloured panelling was highly effective too. Overall the immediate impression was of style & a very ‘european’ sophistication. Internally the building was just as engaging with bright, airy spaces & subtle detail but with strong style & purpose. The communal & ‘breakout’ areas were an excellent idea and the teaching spaces appeared very inviting. Of course there have been a few teething problems, which are only to be expected, but the overall impression was fantastic. If our new school is half as good as Rednock it’ll be brilliant.
Enough gushing for one day I think.

I’ve seen the future & it’s called ‘frog’

For quite sometime now, well, 2-3 years actually we (the good Mr Williamson & myself) have been quietly beavering away behind the scenes assessing, installing, trialling, testing a whole plethora of VLE’s, MLE’s & Learning Platforms. The intention being to find the right solution for the College, our very own holy grail that would do everything we as an institution wanted it to do. Not what other developers & suppliers told us we needed. From Open source solutions to bespoke builds we’ve covered the lot. Our collective magnifying glasses have scanned every nook & cranny of Moodle, It’s Learning, Kaleidos, Joomla & a whole host of other options to name but a few. A fair few hundred unseen man hours have gone into this quest. It seemed that although there are some cracking options out there we were always left wanting more. Then a couple of months ago I found our golden chalice. It’s a Frog.
Frog, who are based in the UK have, over the last few years developed, what is quite simply an AWESOME array of tools under the collective term of a Virtual Learning Environment. The brilliant thing is though, it’s so, SO much more than that. It’s a complete ‘Digital School’ that has the capacity to grow & develop with your institution as you do. Over the past 10 years I’ve become pretty hard to impress with technologies but this literally blew my socks off. The more I see of it in action the more I see a huge plain of potential open up in front of me in the landscape of online provision. It is stunning. Mr W is putting together the case for us to purchase Frog a.s.a.p. I am genuinely excited at the prospect of developing such a resource for the College. Before you ask or even contemplate the thought that they might be paying me to say this. I’m not. Go check out their site for more info, especially the testimonies from schools currently using Frog.
For the first time in quite a while “The futures bright, the futures called frog”.

http://colorschemedesigner.com/

One of the many things I’m asked to do every now & then is create print quality graphics for a wide range of different publication. A long time favorite tool in part of this process is the one provided by the excellent Colour Scheme Designer. I’ll either start with it to create an appropriate colour scheme or use it once I’ve knocked some preliminary things together in Photoshop. Either way it’s wide range of colour harmonies and options is unbelievably useful. It’s one of the top 10 BCO Web Dev essential apps.
