BIG BANG SOUTH WEST!

Posted by admin  Published in Events, Hard Graft, Meetings, STEMNET

To round off a hectic week for the Skate Project we took a display & some budding skaters to the BIG BANG SOUTH WEST young engineers & scientists fair held at Exeter University.

More than 2000 people visited the fair yesterday (Thursday 28 June 2012) to marvel at the fascinating science, technology, engineering and maths on display at The University’s Streatham campus.

Over 50 local and national organisations helped make the event a success, letting students know where studying science, engineering, technology and maths could take them as well as telling them about the latest developments or technology in their field.

More than 200 students also demonstrated the projects they entered for competitions including the National Science & Engineering Competition and the CREST Awards.
Interest in the skate project was high from Students & Teachers alike from all over the South West. Compliments were also paid towards the project and it’s achievements.

Our students were also treated to an amazing array of scientific explosions and experiments in the Northcott Theatre by a team of Sussex University Scientists led by showman ‘Dr Hal’. We even got to see ‘Quantum Levitation’ in the flesh a real, scientific contender to build actual ‘Hover Boards’ in the future. Amazing stuff indeed!

The day finished with a glitzy award ceremony in the Northcott Theatre where judges revealed their top choices and handed out over 30 prizes to students who will go on to the National finals next year in London.

ONCE – No age limit?

Posted by admin  Published in Events, Family Science Day, Riding, Riding Skills

Latest addition to the ‘Once’ demo sessions is a quick demo by ‘Mad’ Madge Madgerson of the Vans ‘Silver Surfers’ squad.
Madge is a bit of a retro freak but her one handed walking stick assisted 180 rail grab is something to behold.

Check her out and the rest of the days events this coming weekend.

Despite the high winds and occasional downpours Science Day 2011 was a great succes with a large amount collected for the chemotherapy unit appeal (total to follow soon).

Thanks to Stan, Sam, Jo and Adam for the time and support in running this event.

Family Science Day 2010

Posted by pfordham  Published in Balance Board, Events, Meetings, News, Science
This years annual display at BCC Science Day focused on the theme “Equilibrium”. Thankyou to all who were involved (staff and student mentors) and all who visited and had a go at one of our physical challenges or practical activties. Over 160 “Mini Balance Boards” were made during the day and 260 “Balancing Parrots” were decorated and taken away by students of all ages (the youngest being 2yrs old!). It has also been possible to supply some of our local primary schools with materials to make the “Balancing Parrot” in class. Please contact me at the college if you work in primary education and would like to do similar with your students.

Massive thankyou also to Lee at BRANDIT (our latest sponsor / supporter) for providing staff and mentors with the branded STEMNET T-Shirts. If you would like to get involved in the projects activties please contact us!
