Cross Country

Cross country results –We were the only North Devon school to make it down to the first round of the ESAA English Schools’ Cup in Newquay. The year 8 team finished 4th – Sam Ellis 6, Mark Bryce 8, Callum Hookway 19, Adam North, Matt Fay and Matt Tobin. The Year 9/10 team finished 5th – Kieran Jewell 7, Joe Kelly 13, Hugo Blick 17, Luke Hasted and Matt Cole. Both teams were close to making it through to the next round which is schools from the whole of the South West of England so well done boys!

Cross country results – in the Stephen’s Shield competition at Torrington, Dani Jewell won the medal for 1st in her race and Kieran Jewell picked up the medal for 2nd in his. Our other best placed runners were Louise Wilson 6, Rayanne Vitali 5, Leanna Fay 5, Anela Butler 7, Sam Ellis 4, Mark Bryce 5, Charley Elliott 7, Asha Brasington-Burn 8 and Kallum Warren 9.

At the North Devon Cross Country Championships there were some excellent performances. The highest finishes and therefore those who will probably be selected to represent North Devon at the County Championships were :-

Junior Girls – Dani Jewell 4th, Rayanne Vitali 5th, Laura Butler 7th

Inter Girls – Leanna Fay 9th, Anela Butler 14th

Year 7 Boys – Scott Braunton 12th, Kallum Warren 15th

Junior Boys – Ben Fisher-Anderson 12th

We expect Kieran Jewell to also be selected if he is recovered from Injury. Mark Bryce 16th, Sam Ellis 17th, Martyn Levien 17th and Zack Hills 18th ran extremely well but probably just missed out on selection.

Football

The Year 8 Football team also did well this year, reaching the semi-final. Unfortunately they met their match and were beaten by Braunton school 5-2. The players were disappointed not to repeat last year’s run of reaching the final, but accepted that they were beaten by the better team.

The Year 7 football team were unlucky to lose 4-3 in the semi finals against Braunton having come back from being 4-1 down.

The Year 9 football team won the North Devon Cup 4-2 against Braunton having beaten Pilton 3-1 earlier in the term in the semi finals. This is an outstanding achievement for a team that finished bottom of their group in Year 7 and demonstrates the effects of hard work and team cohesion (and brilliant management of course!)

Mr Martin

Congratulations to the Year 10 football team who beat South Molton, Great Torrington and Chulmleigh in the group stage and then Park in the semi final. They then beat Pilton 3-0 in the final to become the champions of North Devon.

It was very competitive game with both teams having good spells of possession. There were very few chances in the first half, which left the score line at 0-0 at half time.

In the second half Pilton came out strong and Bideford defended really well to keep them out. Once they had ridden the storm, Bideford increased the ‘tempo’ and started to create some good chances and looked like they were going to score first. With only 15 minutes to go Bideford finally got their reward and Sam Curtis scored to go 1-0 in front. With time running out Pilton pushed forward to find an equaliser, but only managed to leave more space for Bideford to exploit in behind their defence. As a result, the game was finished off by Jake England crossing in a delightful ball, which was deflected into the pilton goal to make it 2-0 and then Sam Curtis made it 3-0 with a delicate side foot into the corner.

Well done boys!

badminton

Badminton

The U19 team of Tom Shapland, Sean Downing, Billy Wales and Ben Shapland became the new North Devon Schools’ Champions in the competition hosted by Petroc College.

The U16 team of Ben Shapland, Kasey Elliott, Sam Symons and Adam Randleson were the runners up in the North Devon Schools’ Championships at Chulmleigh.

Table Tennis

Fourteen Year 10 students and ten 6th Formers have taken table tennis coaching certificates with Chris Brown the South West table tennis development officer and former student here. They will now be involved with coaching younger students.

Multi-skills Festival

At the beginning of December the College hosted 160 Year 1 and 2 pupils from our feeder primary schools for a Multi-skills Festival. Students from Years 9 and 10 organised the activities extremely efficiently.

The College is running sports leader courses in Year 10 and the 6th Form and so far the Year 10 sports leaders have organised PE activities at Orchard Vale Primary School in Barnstaple and the Year 13 Community Sports leaders have run a dodgeball tournament for Year 8s at lunchtimes.

Netball

The U14 netball team performed really well in their tournament. They came 3rd in their group losing out to goal difference. They beat Braunton and Ilfracombe, drew against Shebbear and lost 6-4 to Torrington. They still have the league matches to play between now and the end of term. All of the girls played really well including the year 8′s who were brought into the squad.

The U16 Bideford College Netball Team finished 2nd in the North Devon Tournament and therefore qualified for the Devons.

After two ‘false start’ (due to bad weather!) the County Championships were eventually played at Exeter University on 7th December.

Unfortunately we lost our Goal Attack, Beth Weir, at the last training session with a broken finger. Despite this situation the girls performed admirably giving 100% effort in every match. We eventually finished 7th in Devon which is a great achievement in itself.

This was the last match for this group of girls who have only lost twice in North Devon in the 5 years of representing the College.

The squad including Beth were Leanna Fay, Emma Clark, Josie Simmons, Sadie Herbert, Dani Staddon, Elisha Nicholls, Megan Blight, Naila Rana and Sophie Gallimore (Year 11 only).

In the North Devon Netball league the Year 11 team have remained unbeaten for the last two seasons and therefore they won the leagues in 2008 & 2009 The League matches for years 8-10 will continue until Easter 2010. The Year 7’s will start their league in January 2010.

Rugby

Congratulations to Ashlee Crouch who has been selected for the North Devon Schools’ U15 rugby squad.

Well done to the U13 rugby players who went to the N+E Devon schools’ competition in Exeter. They had a tough day but managed to beat Teignmouth 15-0, drew with West Exe 5-5 and lost to Tiverton, Sidmouth, Chulmleigh and Colyton. Tries were scored by George King, Ryan James, Sam Ellis and either Ben Radcliffe or Charlie Allman who both claimed one! Matt Grout put in some great tackles, Jordan Witney played very well on his debut and the year 7′s George King, Harry Jones and Alex Rodgers did not play as if they were a year younger!

Year 9 Rugby

Twelve Year 9 rugby players took part in the North and East Devon 10′s tournament held at St Lukes College Exeter on the 24th November. They did extremely well only losing one match in the group stages which unfortunately meant they narrowly missed out on the cup competition but were entered into the Shield competition. This did not deter them or damage their resolve in anyway. In fact it did the opposite, never looking back they won all their other matches to be the Shield Winners. They must all be commended for their performance both on and off the pitch, making me a very proud teacher that day. Please ignore all rumours that I now owe them all a happy meal each!

Mr Palmer

Rugby Trip to Twickenham

47 students, 6 members of staff and 1 coach took the road to Twickenham to see England v Argentina in the recent autumn internationals. Despite a reported poor performance by our national side they were cheered on and applauded by the Bideford crowd to a rare victory. A good day was had by all.
