Girls’ Football:
The year 7 girls’ football team finished third out of the top 6 schools in Devon at the County Finals at Feniton FC. Congratulations girls!
U15 North Devon Schools Rugby Final:
Bideford started the game very strongly scoring two early tries through excellent possession and competing strongly at the break down. Charlie White slotted both conversions through the posts which gave the lads a 12-0 lead. However, Park came back strongly and capitalised on some Bideford mistakes, scoring two quick tries just before the end of half time. Fortunately for Bideford, Park missed both kicks and went in at half time 10-14 down to Bideford.
Park started the second half the better team, capitalising on some great turn over balls scoring 2 tries to Bideford’s one but failing to convert either try. However Bideford’s Charlie White, ever cool under pressure, made sure Bideford remained 1 point clear going into the final minutes. Park now threw everything into attack and Bideford defended valiantly but inevitably gave away a kickable penalty. Park missed and play resumed and as the clock ticked down the final seconds Bideford’s Will Jones kicked the ball into touch to secure victory. Final score Bideford 21, Park 20. Both teams should be commended on a highly competitive and thrilling rugby match played in a true sporting manner.
Bideford Team – Scott Craner, Alex Rodgers, Josh Salmon, Hector Kuenzler-Byrt, Douglas Jackson, Ross Bowden, Ty Williams, Harry Jones, Will Jones, Reece Pearn, Josh Lindo, Charlie White, Michael Smith, George King and Dan Cox. Well done to you all!
Athletics:
While competing at the North Devon Championships the following students were selected to represent North Devon at the County Championships next month:
Olivia Phillips, Alexina Mills, Jo Van Hecke, Lola Colvin, Bobby Talbot-Adams, Lucy Burnett, Dani Jewell, Hannah Vincent, Abby Jones, Josh Lindo, Scott Braunton, Charlie White, Alex Vizor and Rowan Chanin. Good luck to you all!
In the ESAA competition at Exeter Arena performances are given points and our best scorers were Lola Colvin with 34 from 2 events, Olivia Phillips 30, Louis Woodward 28, Georgia O’Connor 27 and Jake Beer, Michael Smith and Kayla Johnson with 26. Other best scores from 1 event were Josh Lindo with 19, Fern Tithecott 18, Jordan Fisher 18, Reece Pearn 17 and Lucy Burnett and Scott Braunton 16. It was a great effort from over 50 athletes and our best team results were the Inter Girls (year 9+10) who were 5th in Devon and the Inter Boys who were 7th.
Tennis:
So far all the tennis teams have won one match and lost one match in their leagues. It will depend on the results of their final group match as to whether they qualify for the knock-out rounds.
Rounders:
We are half way through the rounders season and all teams are faring well so far. The year 7s have improved over the last three games culminating in a win against GTS. The year 8s have won 2 and lost 1 game while the year 9s have won all their league matches. Year 10 have not lost any league matches.
An excellent start to the season for these teams. After half term there are matches against Pilton, South Molton, Ilfracombe and Kingsley. I am confident that the results will remain positive!
Golf:
Michael Townshend, Kieran Tanton and Josh Salmon won the Devon Team Golf Championship at Brixham Golf Club and now go on to play in the National Finals at the Woodhall Spa National Golf Centre in Lincolnshire in July. In terrible conditions the team did well to maintain concentration levels and finger mobility to achieve a narrow victory over the local Brixham School in a field of over 100 competitors. Michael finished second overall in the competition and goes on to the individual final in June.
Under 15 Girls Cricket (Regional Finals at Bristol University):
The girls travelled to Bristol University and competed superbly against schools such as Lord Wandsworth and Millfield School. The Team ended up joint fifth in the whole of the South West – a remarkable achievement considering the standard of the opposition.
The squad: Rachel Bailey (Captain), Olivia Phillips (Vice-Captain), Rose Ball, Millie White, Georgia O’Connor, Freya Vincent, Olivia Vincent, Jo Van Hecke, Megan Gibbs, Chloe Lovelass, Shelby Mullen, Chloe Burrows-Bryan. A massive well done to all.
Sports Day:
Tutor groups are in the process of sorting out their Sports Day teams.
Sports Days are Monday 17 June for years 7+8 (with a reserve day of Monday 1 July) and Tuesday 25 June for years 9+10 (with a reserve day of Thursday 27 June).
Letters detailing the order of events and arrangements for the day will go home to parents after half-term.

The Year 10 rugby team convincingly beat Pilton 42-14 in their North Devon Schools’ semi final at Moreton Park. The team played a near perfect game so it would be unfair to single out individuals for praise. They have earned a place in the final against Park which will be played at Barnstaple rugby club on Tues 30th at 5.15/5.30. Any supporters will be very welcome! Good luck boys!

Football:
The year 7 football team finished 3rd in the North Devon 5-a-side competition being unlucky to miss out on qualification for the next round by 1 point. In the Devon Cup they reached the Quarter Finals which is a creditable effort in their first season as a team and great things are expected of them over the coming years. The year 9 football team are having another very successful season – coming second in the North Devon Championships and reaching the Quarter Finals of the Devon Cup. The year 10 football team are North Devon Champions after beating Pilton 9 – 1 in the semi-final and Torrington 5 – 3 in the final. The year 11 football team have also reached the final of the North Devon Championships and will play before the end of term. Year 10, 11 and 6th form students have officiated all fixtures this year as a result of recent referee courses organised by the College and independently qualified students volunteering their services. Our thanks to them – only compliments received so far.
All the College teams have enjoyed using the new kits supplied by Notts Construction and M and E Alarms as part of this year’s sponsorship deal.
Girls’ Football:
All 3 girls football teams (Year 7, U14 and U16) have competed in tournaments this term. The year 7 team is unbeaten in their league and will now have a North Devon Schools final against the best team from the other league.
Football Academy:
With 3 matches to play, the Football Academy U18 team are in a mid-table position in their BCS league. There have been major improvements in performance, including from those who only train and do not play matches regularly. During half term Ben Brend, Liam Gregory, Billy Rhoads and Josh Johnston spent 2 days training with the Exeter City U18 squad. They thoroughly enjoyed it and it was interesting to see the standards of play and how hard they worked.
Rugby:
Michael Smith (year 10) was selected for the Devon U15 rugby squad and has represented the Devon ‘B’ team.
The year 10 team have earned a well-deserved semi-final place in the North Devon schools competition, while also reaching the finals of the North Devon 7′s- thus qualifying for the County Finals. At the County Finals they stunned the home crowd going 7 – 0 up against the favourites but could not keep the lead. They then beat Devonport High School 22 – 7 and Coombeshead 40 – 19. They took the lead in the semi-final against Kingsbridge but let it slip and with the game level at the final whistle it went into extra time and unfortunately Kingsbridge got the next score to join Blundells in the final.
Cross Country:
9 runners competed in the Cross Country Championships in Plymouth with Scott Braunton finishing 4th, Dani Jewell 6th and Molly Pennington 10th. Scott and Dani also represented Devon at the South West Championships in Bristol where Scott came 9th and Dani 19th. Scott and Dani have both been selected to represent Devon at the National Championships in Derbyshire.
In the Gliddon and Squire Cross Country League Levi Colvin took 1st in the U19 boys and Scott Braunton and Bobby Talbot-Adams were 1st and 2nd in the U15 boys. The commitment of the runners paid off because in the team events the U15 girls and boys took the trophy. The runners were: Nancy Pennington, Ali Grounsel and Kerris Bayliss for the girls while Dan Manning joined Scott and Bobby in the boys team. Congratulations to the competitors and all the other runners and their parents who gave up their Sunday mornings to take part in the league.
Netball:
The Netball teams have made a very positive start to the North Devon League. The Year 7 and 8 teams are faring well having lost one and two games respectively. It is the first time in the league for year 7’s and they have equipped themselves very well in preparation for the tournament later in the term. The year 9 team has remained undefeated in the league (and North Devon) with 3 players, Rachel Bailey, Olivia Phillips and Megan Gibbs, helping the Under 15 team to reach 3rd place in the group stages of their tournament. The year 10 team has had mixed fortunes and expects to finish mid-table at the end of the season.
Hockey:
Hockey results this year have been mixed but the year 7’s have done particularly well and the senior club after school on a Friday has been thriving. Year 10 boys have now joined that club as well and we have our first senior mixed match against Park before the end of term.
Badminton:
We entered all of the new badminton leagues this year and hosted three competitions in our Sports Hall. The U16 boys, U14 girls and U14 boys all came 2nd while the U14 girls beat both Torrington and Chumleigh 5 – 0 to get into the final where they beat Chumleigh again to become North Devon Schools Champions. They then played in the county tournament in Paignton and narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Bethany Gibb, Megan Gibb, Olivia Phillips and Jess Wells Davidson played in Paignton and Olivia Vincent also represented the team in the league.
Gymnastics:
Well done to the gymnasts who took part in the North Devon Gymnastics Competition on Sunday 10 March. It was a long day but they all enjoyed it and had plenty of success.
The Personal Endeavour Award went to Alison Mower for commitment to sport, in College and out. Lucy Burnett won the trophy for musical interpretation and Pie Ferracin was given the Charlotte Shaw Award for poise, grace and elegance. In the U13 girls’ novice competition, Chanel Ingram was placed third and the U13 girls’ novice A team – Jasmin Burnett, Alice Harding and Lily Smith joining Chanel – also came third. The U15 mixed intermediate team – Lucy Burnett, Gabbie Worthington, Phoebe Blick, Kelly Rennolds and Joe Taylor-Richards – took first place. Joe also had individual success in the U15 boys intermediate competition, finishing first. The U15 girls intermediate team – Beth Tucker, Bryony Turner, Pie Ferracin, Kayleigh Davis and Annie Westaway – finished third. A big well done to you all.
Swimming:
Two new swimming galas have been arranged this year and in the first, year 10 and 11 boys and girls beat West Buckland. The year 7, 8 and 9 gala at West Buckland will hopefully produce a similar result.
Indoor Cricket:
Bideford College Girls under 13’s and under 15’s are now North Devon Indoor Cricket Champions. On Monday 4 March the North Devon Indoor Cricket Championships were held here at Bideford College. Both teams had to play four matches each and by the end of the tournament Bideford College were unbeaten in both age groups.
In the Devon finals the under 13′s won the Shield Competition. After narrowly missing out on a place in the Cup Competition, the young team battled back to beat Blundell’s school in the final, with Georgia O’Connor scoring 5 runs off the last ball to win! A week later the under 15′s went to down to Exeter and returned to Bideford as champions of Devon and will now represent the College in the regional finals in Bristol on 24 April.

Bideford College was represented by twenty students from years 7 to 10 competing at the Regional Indoor Rowing Championships. Although no team trophies for us this year, over half our students achieved personal bests pushing themselves to exhaustion. There were two medal winners on the day, both in year 10. Charlie White won gold in both the Regional and County Competitions with Nick Dualibi-Wilson winning silver in the County Competition and bronze in the Regional. The other team members were Alex Rowland, Libbie Willis, Bayley Webster, Ryan Sutton, Jack Burnett, Natasha Peters, Sally Kearney, Soma Baggi, Becky Brown, TJ Lee, Georgia O’Connor, Chloe Lovelass, Morgan White, Eden Brittle, Jess Cox, Hannah Vincent, Abbie Lawson and Beth Gayson. Forthcoming Fixtures:
The summer term will see the PE department involved in athletics, rounders, cricket and tennis.
